II.14: "The contacts of the organs with the objects are the producers of cold and heat, happiness and sorrow. They have a beginning and an end, and are transient. Bear them, O descendant of Bharata."

Summary of this lecture:

Our life is mixture of pleasures and pains brought in due to the variety of contacts between the senses and their objects. The senses are the measuring devices to measure the degree of the various qualities like heat or cold. (Sense of vision gives a measure of size, shape, color, distance; sense of hearing measures the pitch, rhythm, loudness etc. & so forth). They are sometimes pleasant and sometimes painful. There is no rule that a given sensation will always be pleasant or always be painful. It keeps on changing. A hot touch is pleasant for a while in cold weather but the same is painful in warm weather. Moreover these sensations come and go. Knowing this, one should learn to bear these sensations. The life's journey towards the goal must go on without getting bogged down by the temporary pleasure-pains. Take the 'measure' of the world by the senses - that is what they are for; but do not get swayed by these sensations; because they will keep on changing. We run after a sensation when it brings pleasure; but as soon as we get there, the sensation turns into pain. But because of our desire for it, we are now stuck to it, even when it is giving pain. So Sri Krishna is making Arjuna aware of this profound truth: senses, when come with contact with their objects, give their measurements, like a thermometer telling you of the temperature. The pleasures/pains are not objectively associated with them. They come and go. They are not real. So one should learn to withstand these and not get rattled.
