IV.28: Similarly, others are performers of sacrifices through wealth, through austerity, through yoga, and through study and knowlede; others are ascetics with severe vows.

IV.29: Constantly practising control of the vital forces by stopping the movements of the outgoing and the incoming breaths, some offer as a sacrifice the outgoing breath in the incoming breath; while still others, the incoming breath in the outgoing breath.

IV.30: Others, having their food regulated, offer the vital forces. All of them are knowers of the sacrifice and have their sins destroyed by the sacrifice.

IV.31: Those who partake of the nectar left over after a sacrifice, reach the eternal Brahman. This world ceases to exist for one who does not perform sacrifces. What to speak of the other (world), O best among the Kurus (Arjuna)!

IV.32: Thus, various kinds of sacrifices lie spread at the mouth of the Vedas. Know them all to be born of action. Knowing thus, you will become liberated.

IV.33: O destroyer of enemies, Knowledge considered as a sacrifice is greater than sacrifices requiring materials. O son of Prtha, all actions in their totality culminate in Knowledge.

Summary of this lecture:

The process of spiritual evolution is accompanied by a corresponding paradigm-change. As we evolve through the principle of sacrifice (Yajna), our vista is broadened and the decisions and actions, which were based on the previous narrow vision, change too. It is like one does in climbing a mountain. Every step taken is the work offered as price for evolution; it also means giving up your previous position. The sacrifices involving materials, austerities, karma-yoga, studying scriptures, and practicing the discrimination between right & wrong - will all be means of spiritual evolution, ultimately culminating in the awareness of Brahman appearing in all different forms. When work is done with the Yajna-spirit, then they no longer bind one; rather such a worker ultimately reaches the Eternal Brahman. For those who do not imbibe the spirit of Yajna, even the worldly success is illusive; what to speak of the spiritual.
