VIII.4:
That which exists
in the
physical plane is the mutable entity, and that which exists in the
divine plane is the Person. O best among the embodied beings, I am the
entity that exists in the sacrifice in this body.
VIII.5:
And at the time of death, anyone who departs by giving up the body
while thinking of Me alone, he attains My state. There is no doubt
about this.
VIII.6:
O son of Kunti! Thinking of any entity whichever it may be one gives up
the body at the end, he attains that very one, having been engrossed in
its thought.
VIII.7:
Therefore, think of Me at all times and fight. There is no doubt that
by dedicating your mind and intellect to Me, you will attain to Me
alone.
VIII.8:
O son of Pritha! By meditating with a mind which is engaged in the yoga
of practice and which does not stray away to anything else, one reaches
the supreme Person existing in the effulgent region.

Summary of this lecture:
The eighth chapter answers various basic questions like ‘who am I’,
‘what is this world around’ and ‘what is the purpose of human life?’ It
deals with many technical terms – Adhibhuta,
Adhidaiva,
Adhiyajna
etc. The ever changing material world what we perceive is called Adhibhuta. The
power which vitalizes this ever changing world and controls it is
called Adhidaiva.
God is present as the discriminating faculty that guides us in what is
right or wrong. This Presence in each one of us is called Adhiyajna. Every
human being is continuously busy in actions. All the unselfish,
charitable, loving actions are called Yajna
- Sacrifice. God is the principle of sacrifice in all human beings. God
gives a simple way to realize His presence. Whosoever remembers God at
the time of death will attain HIM. Death is the eventuality of life and
it provides a great opportunity to escape from this tormenting circle
of birth and death. To utilize this opportunity one must train oneself
throughout one’s life. As our life is mostly revolving around all the
material things it is very difficult to remember God at the time of
death which can come anytime. Hence one must practice remembering God
even when busy in worldly actions. Then only the human life will be
considered as fruitful. If one spends whole life going after the world
then that is what he will remember at the time of his death. Hence God
advises Arjuna and to all of us to do our actions by devoting our mind
and intellect to God alone.
